Haikou Primary School
General Layout
The project is located in Jiangdong district, Haikou City, in the international cultural exchange block The Primary school contains of 36 classes, providing 1620 seats; The kindergarten has 9 classes, providing 270 seats, both, kiga and school, situated in the north to minimize the noise impact from the south main street. Admin office, sport hall, and library therefore are put in the south.
Morphological Space
Environmental considerations are a central aspect of the building design. In order to adapt to the local tropical climate characteristics, the teaching building, the comprehensive building and its supporting functional areas are arranged around a courtyard, so as to form a cool and ventilated space, convenient for communication between internal functions and creating a school of short ways.
Each floor of the teaching building is divided into two teaching units. In addition to the conventional configuration, each teaching unit is further equipped with an activity hall, whose partition wall can be opened during open activities, so as to adapt to the future education concept of sharing and flexibility.
The supporting functional area for teaching, office and life is located on the first floor, connecting the teaching building, library and comprehensive building. At the same time, a sharing platform covering the whole campus is built up. The west end of the sharing platform is connected to the main entrance steps, and the east side continues to the big playground grandstand. In the middle, various theme courtyards are formed according to the school requirements, open for all ages for activities and communication. The principle of the sharing platform is to link functional areas with each other, , so as to realize the multi-level connection between individual buildings and form an integrated indoor and open space systems.
Kindergarten
Continuing the design concept of primary school, the kindergarten also provides a cool and ventilated indoor environment through the atrium. The music and sports classroom to the south face the open space activity site, semi enclosed. An architectural highlight, the spiral roof, provides an accessible winding platform for play and greenery.
Facade Material
The local climate characteristics and the special safety considerations for children lead to mostly solid external walls with textured paint; Fiber concrete is used as shading and decorative materials for the library and comprehensive building units. The sports center, facing the main road of the city, adopts a visually rich and lightweight sunshade framework, which creates a landmark image for the whole district, in the spirit of tropical architecture.
Diversified Teaching Mode and Intelligent Operation
The teaching space is committed to create more communication opportunities to foster dialog between teachers and students and create meeting opportunities for all. Multi-functional teaching space, in addition to the common classrooms, provide children with an interesting way to show their imagination and creativity, so as to cultivate their comprehensive ability to solve problems independently and cooperate in the society.
In front of main entrances traffic congestion on urban roads are common. By introducing the transfer traffic flow into the underground, students and parents can meet safely and smoothly in the transfer area through personal ID information and electronic guidance equipment, the flow of people can be directed. The school’s sports venues are equipped with independent entrances and exits. During holidays and school hours, the sports venues and underground garages can be opened to the outside world for the use of inviting surrounding residents to use them, increasing the efficiency of public facilities and enriching the lives of surrounding residents.
The microclimate environment of the campus is improved by adopting large-area three-dimensional greening, an activity platform and photovoltaic power generation is set on the roof. The landscape design adopts concepts of the Sponge City and uses ecological measures such as permeable pavement, sunken green space and rainwater garden to purify and manage the runoff of roofs, roads and squares.
